27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. conceived the idea for Chicago Neighbors United after witnessing drug dealers hosting picnics and giving away sneakers. It troubled him that young people looked up to these negative influences.
Chicago Neighbors United is led by unpaid volunteers who are dedicated to giving back to the community.
Chicago Neighbors United: Empowering our community's youth with $50,000 in scholarships, turning dreams into realities and shaping a brighter future.
Since 1995, this event has provided underprivileged inner-city youth with food, school supplies, and gift certificates to help them throughout the school year. With the support of local businesses and corporate sponsorships, the Stay in School Picnic has become an annual event and has grown to over 2,000 participants.
In addition to serving youth, CNU has developed programming with the seniors of our community in mind. Our programs promote a healthy lifestyle and provide outlets for social engagement. We have established volunteer opportunities for young people with seniors that encourage valuable intergenerational relationships.
This fund plays a pivotal role in supporting college-bound students with demonstrated financial need. To date, we've proudly awarded over $50,000 in scholarships. Your contribution can make a difference. Click here to donate and empower the next generation of achievers.
